About the book

This innovative approach to the development of community-based health education and patient advocacy programs offers valuable guidance for religious and medical leaders interested in developing partnerships between health systems and religious congregations.

Richard G. Bennett and W. Daniel Hale discuss a range of medical topics and provide practical information on establishing partnerships, identifying resources that can be obtained from local and national organizations, and training volunteers to assist others in navigating our complex health system. In showing that these programs can be successful in bringing appropriate care to people who are often overlooked, the authors pay special attention to the challenges and opportunities presented by our aging and increasingly diverse population.

About W. Daniel Hale, Ph.D.

W. Daniel Hale is Professor of Psychology and Director of the Community Health Initiative at Stetson University. He earned his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at the University of Massachusetts/Amherst, where he also completed his clinical internship. He served as a clinical psychologist at Orlando Regional Medical Center before joining the faculty at Stetson University in 1979. He has been a consultant to hospitals, medical centers, and colleges, and he maintained a psychotherapy practice for more than twenty-five years.

Since 1992 Dr. Hale has collaborated with faculty from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine on the development of community-based health programs built around alliances between medical organizations and religious congregations. This work led to the publication of Building Healthy Communities through Medical-Religious Partnerships (co-authored by Richard G. Bennett, MD of Johns Hopkins) for the Johns Hopkins University Press in 2000. A second edition of this book was published in 2009.

Dr. Hale is also author (with Harold G. Koenig, MD of Duke University) of Healing Bodies and Souls: A Practical Guide for Congregations (Fortress Press, 2003) and numerous research articles on mood disorders, aging, and chronic illness. Since 2003 Dr. Hale has served as President and Executive Director of the O’Neill Foundation for Community Health, and in 2009 he was appointed Adjunct Associate Professor of Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
